Benefits of Carbon Fiber Car Parts

1. Light Weight
Carbon fiber car parts are lightweight, especially compared to steel and sheet metal counterparts. By using it, you can reduce the weight of your car by a significant amount.

2. Strength
Compared to other materials, carbon fiber car parts are much stiffer and stronger. In fact, it,s got the highest strength and stiffness per density on the market.
It,s also able to absorb energy at a higher rate, which is crucial in the event of a crash or collision. Carbon fiber car parts can make your car safer to drive as a result.

3. Durability
Like strength, durability is a desirable trait for car parts and materials. After all, you don,t want a car that,s always needing repairs a the auto shop. Not only is that an inconvenience, but it can drain your wallet too.
Carbon fiber material ranks high on the durability scale, giving you parts you can rely on. Because of this, it,s especially good if you,re traveling often.

4. Heat Resistance
Often carbon fiber car parts will produce a lot of heat as part of the process. For most materials this is unavoidable, but carbon fiber isn,t good at conducting heat. If you have a high-powered car that,s prone to produce more heat, it,s especially useful.
Thermal expansion in parts will cause them to weaken over time. With carbon fiber, there is less thermal expansion. The parts won,t degrade due to high heat exposure, keeping them working longer.

Types Of Carbon Fiber Car Parts

Front Spoilers

Carbon fiber front spoilers are designed to add airflow to the front of the vehicle, which can help improve performance and stability at high speeds. They're typically positioned below the front bumper and can enhance the car's overall aerodynamics.

Rear Spoilers

Rear spoilers are another common carbon fiber car part. They're usually mounted on the trunk or near the rear of the vehicle and are used to improve handling and stability at high speeds. Rear spoilers can also add a racing-inspired look to your car.

Rear Diffusers

A carbon fiber rear diffuser is a component that goes beneath the rear of the vehicle. It's designed to smooth out the airflow coming from the rear of the car and can create negative air pressure, which can help produce downforce. The increased downforce can improve traction and handling when driving at higher speeds.

Side Skirts

Carbon fiber side skirts are components that are mounted on the side of the vehicle, running alongside the lower edge of the car. They can help reduce drag by preventing air from getting caught in the gap between the road and the car.

How Are Carbon Fiber Car Parts Made?

Carbon fiber car parts such as bumpers and spoilers are exceptionally durable, and they are 1/5 of the weight of the steel ones. Recently, more car manufacturers turn to carbon fiber to make car parts because a car that weighs less accelerates more quickly and thus uses less fuel. Custom spoilers, bumpers, and other parts make a vehicle more aerodynamic. When these parts are made of carbon fiber, they create this effect without the hindrance of extra weight.

Carbon fiber parts are made of fabric that is tightly woven with very fine threads of virtually pure carbon. To transform the material into a car part, professionals use a certain technology. It starts with a pre-built fiberglass mold, on the edge of which a butyl double-sided tape is applied as a first step. It's time for a special sealing layer. Its function is to fill any micro-cracks in the mold. Masking tape is used to protect the lip of the mold. Then a second separating layer, based on polyvinyl alcohol is applied, into the fiberglass form. It serves for the subsequent separation of the already finished carbon product from the mold.

After that, it is time for the carbon fiber material. It is enrolled and sprayed. It is applied layer by layer, the first layer being attached to the mild with a specially designed spray adhesive, which is subsequently absorbed by the resin. It is extremely important that the first layer lies tightly in the shape of the mold and the texture of the fabric is beautifully arranged. After all, there shouldn't be any wrinkles at this point. Each subsequent layer of carbon fabric is laid on top of the previous one, fixing it again with spray glue. The material has its own strength, so it is easy to trim the excess.

The fabric is layered seven times, again following the lines of the mold. It is the turn of a layer of polyester separating fabric, which creates a barrier between the carbon fiber and the synthetic mesh finally laid on it. The role of the synthetic mesh is key to the good vacuuming of the part and the vacuum movement of the resin. Arranged in this way, the mold is ready for closing with vacuum foil, which is glued along the edge of the mold to the initially placed butyl double-sided tape.

Meanwhile, it is important to leave "bellies" of the vacuum foil in places so that the additional volume, thus created allows the foil to press tightly over the entire area of the mold. Thus sealed, the mold is ready for vacuuming - a process in which the material in it is pressed hard and the air is completely extracted with the vacuum turned on. As the vacuum sucks the air out, the layers in the mold are compressed. It is time to release the epoxy resin from one end of the mold, which, with the help of the applied vacuum, gradually saturates the carbon fiber layers in the mold, thus ensuring the lamination of the carbon fiber automotive part. After further heat treatment, the part is ready to come out from the mold. When it is cleaned up, the solid fusion of epoxy resin and layers of carbon fiber fabric is formed.

FAQ

Q: How to care for carbon fiber car parts?

A: For the most part, you can and should care for your carbon fiber components no differently than you do your painted surfaces. You wash them the same as you would paint, you can polish them to remove swirls and increase gloss, and you can wax and seal them just the same as well.

Q: How long do carbon fiber car parts last?

A: Generally, a well-maintained carbon fibre car bonnet can last many years. While there is no set lifespan for carbon fibre bonnets .

Q: How should I inspect and repair carbon fiber car parts?

A: You should inspect your carbon fiber car parts at least once every 1–2 weeks. If you find cracks or scratches, you should address them immediately to prevent further damage. Minor cracks and scratches can be fixed with repair kits, but more significant repairs should be done by a specialized automobile garage.

Q: Can carbon fiber car parts dent?

A: The types of composite damage incurred by impact include surface dents, delamination (ply separation or debonding), matrix cracking and fibre breakage. In some cases, it is hard to see any damage even though more severe damage has occurred in the underlying structure.
